Sunil was hospitalised due to depression

Sunil Grover was hospitalised due to depression, was nearly fired from The Kapil Sharma Show, reveals Upasana Singh

Sunil Grover, one of the most loved comedy stars today, has won over audiences with his unforgettable characters on Kapil Sharma’s comedy show. His comic timing and unique style made him an instant favourite. But not many know that during his early days on the show, the makers actually considered removing him, believing he wasn’t good enough.Upasana Singh, who was once part of Kapil Sharma’s team, revealed during her conversation with Lallantop Cinema that Sunil faced serious doubts from the creative team. “When he initially came in, he spoke at a slower pace. So the creative team on that show wanted to fire him because they thought he couldn’t do it, and he couldn’t match up to the rest of the cast. I told them then, and Sunil and all the others know about it, that he is a very good actor — you should keep him on,” she shared.

Sunil’s mental health

Upasana Singh also revealed that Sunil Grover was going through a difficult mental phase at the time. “When Kapil’s show started, he was not well. I asked him what happened, and he shared that he was hospitalised because of depression. He didn’t have much work either. When he came over to my house with Kapil, I didn’t even recognise him because he wasn’t doing much then. But he did so well, and we are such good friends now,” she added.

Sunil’s journey

Sunil Grover is loved for his brilliant comic timing, his ability to slip into any character, and the way he balances humour with emotion. Over the years, he has created some iconic characters like Gutthi, Dr Mashoor Gulati, and Rinku Bhabhi — roles that not only entertained audiences but also gave Indian comedy something truly unique. These performances helped Sunil become a household name and a favourite across generations.Although Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma’s off-screen differences often made headlines, it was their on-screen partnership that truly clicked with viewers. Kapil’s sharp wit combined with Sunil’s character-driven humour created magic on the show week after week. Their chemistry turned the show into one of the most popular programmes on Indian television. Even today, fans continue to revisit their iconic moments, proving how timeless their work together has been.
